What is a summer school in London like?

London summer schools usually run in one of two ways. The first uses the city's university halls of residence, with lessons in the morning and excursions in the afternoon; en-suite single rooms are common in central and east London. The second is the academic junior program held on a boarding-school campus outside the centre, where lessons, sport and activities are all on one site. Homestay is also available, but because London is large the journey between home and school can be long, so for groups a residence or campus is usually easier to manage.

London's great strength is that the city itself works as a classroom. National museums, the River Thames, historic bridges, parks and markets fit easily into the daily program. Weekend trips typically go to nearby cities such as Cambridge, Oxford, Brighton and Canterbury.

A typical day

  • Morning: breakfast, then English lessons, usually in classes grouped by level.
  • Midday: lunch and a short break.
  • Afternoon: a museum, park, historic district or city tour; workshops or sport on some days.
  • Evening: dinner, then an activity at the residence or campus; rooms close at a set time.
  • Weekend: day trips to nearby cities.

Prices

London has the widest price range of any UK city. What drives it is whether you stay in the city or on a campus nearby, whether rooms are single or shared, and how intensive the weekly timetable is. The table below is an approximate market picture compiled from the weekly "from" prices providers publish on their own websites.

London for school groups

For school groups London cuts both ways. Museums, landmarks and the public transport network make it easy to build a culture-heavy program, and accommodation choices are varied. On the other hand the city is large and busy: supervision in crowds, metro and bus planning and walking distances all need careful design. In the peak period from late June to mid-August popular sights are crowded, so visit times are planned in advance.

For a closed school group we design the program ourselves: lesson intensity, excursion routes, teacher involvement and the daily flow, based on the number and age of students. We then propose suitable campus and accommodation options in the offer. Larger groups often do better with a well-connected location or a campus outside the centre, while younger groups benefit from a single-site setup. A separate class for your group, shared mealtimes and a clear evening routine are written into the offer.

Which age group is it for?

Programs in London broadly cover ages 9-18, with most students aged 12-17. For upper middle school and high school students the city experience and cultural program add the most value. For ages 9-11, London's size usually makes a single-site campus outside the city a better fit. Final-year high school students can be offered a more academic and independent daily rhythm.

Accommodation options

Options include university campus residences, boarding-school campuses, student residences and homestay. Residences often have en-suite single rooms, which give students independence, and having teachers in the same building makes supervision easier. On a boarding-school campus, accommodation, lessons and activities are all on one site, which suits younger groups especially. Homestay maximises daily English use, but time must be allowed for the commute. Which option fits is set out in the offer, based on group age, size and dates.

Comparing with other cities

London's alternatives sit in the same country: Oxford or Cambridge for a calmer, academic atmosphere, and Brighton for the seaside. Because they are close to London, a day trip to the capital can also be built in from each of them.

Frequently asked questions about London summer schools

How long does a London summer school last?

Programs usually run 1-4 weeks, and 2-week blocks are the most common. For school groups the length is set around your calendar and budget.

How much does a London summer school cost per week?

Standard junior programs typically start at about £950 – £1,607 per week (2026–2027); academic programs on boarding-school campuses at about £2,595. Tuition, accommodation, meals and activities are usually included; flights, visa, insurance and pocket money are not. Prices for school groups are quoted separately.

Will my child go alone or in a group?

On group programs organised by your school, students travel with teachers. If your school has no program, you can ask us about our group programs; it may be possible to form a suitable group.

Is London safe, and how are students supervised in the city?

London is a large metropolis, so for school groups the group routine in crowded places, meeting points and the teacher-to-student ratio are planned in advance. Students normally go out with an adult and at set times. Details are written into the offer for your school.

Will we stay in a residence or with host families?

Both are possible. For groups a university residence or boarding-school campus is usually easier to supervise. Homestay increases daily English use but needs a transport plan because the city is large.

Is London or Oxford/Cambridge a better fit?

If you want culture, museums and a big-city experience, London; if you want a calmer, walkable and academic setting, Oxford or Cambridge may suit better. We decide together based on age group and goals.
